They all enlisted in Wesobulga, Clay County, AL between 1862 and
1864 mostly by Maj. Wm. Handley. Eldridge was released from the Army in 1863
due to his advanced age (reported to be
63) and severe rheumatism.
Jim Taylor’s homepage lists members of F Company, 25th Alabama

21 or 27,
stepdaughter.
John
died while in service with the Confederacy during the Civil War (30 June 1862)
and Cassie married
Theopilus, John’s younger brother.
14 February 1863, Maj. Handley gave this report:
John
Holifield from Randolph Co AL., joined Confederate Army on 10 April 1862,
private, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 in.,
blue eyes, light hair, fair complection, occupation - farmer. Died from disease
near Oakalona, Miss. on 30 June 1862.
11 Oct. 1862, Cassey Holderfield was given a statement
by Randolph County Justice of the
Peace certifying that she was the widowed wife of John
Holderfield with two (2) orphaned children
and eligible to receive whatever pay he was due.
Note: William D. Hollifield enlisted in the 25th
Ala. Infantry at Wesobulga, AL on 12

W.D. Holifield (Pvt. Company F 25th Regiment Ala) appears on a register of General Hospital, Howard’s
Cove, Richmond, Virginia dated March 10, 1865
According to reports, William was captured at the battle of Resaca, north of Atlanta, in May 1864 and
apparently was sent north to a POW camp. The next record of him was about a year later when he
turned up at a confederate hospital near Richmond, VA and was furloughed back to AL. (KH)
Rebecca’s parents were Britton and
Elizabeth Davis probably from GA or S.C. but living in Randolph Co. AL
in 1850 census
Descendants of William D. and Rebecca J.
(Davis) Holderfield:
We first found William and Rebecca in Randolph Co AL in 1860 with
three sons, Thomas J., William G. and James B. In checking the census we found
that William G. died between 1860 and 1870 in Randolph Co. By the late 1880’s
Thomas Jefferson and James Buchannan had moved to Marshall Co. AL. William and
Rebecca are buried at Bethsaida cemetery in Boaz (Marshall Co.) AL. William has
a tomb but Rebecca does not. After the 1900’s the spelling of the family name
changed from Holifield, Holyfield to the present Holderfield. - (S.O. &
F.H.)
William D. was born 18 July 1835 in GA
died 22 July 1889

Holyfield
Note: In the 1880 census of
Theophilus’ family, Emiline Holyfield was listed as a white female,
21 or 27, stepdaughter
at home. There is a line
drawn through the whole row of information on her and out to the left side of
her
name is "dead". Apparently she must of just
recently passed away. I believe her father was John L. Holyfield. He died in
1862 during the civil war and, apparently, Cassie, his widow, married
Theopilus, John’s younger brother. Also on the same census, Green B. was living with his
brother Theophilus and family. It shows beside Green's name that he was
an invalid and had palsy. (LL)
Note: 1850 census of Randolph
Co AL has Samuel, aged 12, then Franklin, aged 11, no mention of Leonard
1860 census of Calhoun Co. AL has Leonard (19) living
with his parents, no mention of Samuel
or Franklin
Leonard served in the Confederate Army F Company, 25th
Reg’t, Alabama Infantry
Melvine Peiree was French
Note: no record after 1850
Randolph Co census, 1860 Calhoun Co census seems to have him listed as Leonard
Possibly Leonard and Franklin
are the same person, also no mention of Samuel except in 1850 census of
Randoplh Co
living with parents on Randolph
Co censuses of 1850, 1860 & 1870
living with Theopilus - Randolph
Co census of 1880, 34 years old
possibly buried in Springville,
AL
In the 1880 census of Theophilus’ family, Green B. was living with
his brother Theophilus and family. It
shows beside Green's name that he was an
invalid and had palsy. (LL)
Note: living with parents on
Randolph, Calhoun & Randolph Co censuses dated 1850, 1860 & 1870
1900 census of Marshall Co. AL
had Eliza Jane (51) and John Morris (86), married for 2 years,

It also states that Eliza Jane was born in March, 1849
and John was born in Nov, 1813
